For contractors worldwide, the goal of any project is achieving the fastest, most efficient result with the least amount of wear on machinery, and the lowest cost on everything from man-hours to fuel. Jeffrey Machine, Inc. delivers with its Dragon’s Tooth® Rock Cutting System, designed to devour the densest rock, eliminate project downtime, and reduce costs resulting from the need to replace traditional rotating bullet teeth used in rock boring.
ROCK CUTTING CONCEPT
In this revolutionary concept for rock cutting, the Dragon’s Tooth is engineered to remain stationary, unlike old-style bullet teeth which are designed to spin as the auger turns. The problem with traditional bullet teeth is that if they stop spinning due to grit or dirt infiltrating the holder, which is likely when hitting dense rock, they can quickly burn up, adding time and expense to the project as the auger is extracted and teeth are replaced.
INCREASED ROCK CUTTING SPEED
Manufactured with at least double the amount of ultra-high grade carbide deployed along the angular cutting edge, the Dragon’s Tooth is capable of cutting more aggressively into the rock without rotating.
In addition to being built to outlast any bullet-style rock tooth by 5:1, Jeffrey Machine’s Dragon’s Tooth system was designed to significantly increase rock cutting speed. Haynes Electric Utility Corp. reported a 2,500 percent increase in production during a signal light installation project at The Sky Valley Golf Club in Dillard, Georgia, during which they experienced extreme difficulty boring through ultra-hard North Carolina blue granite. In addition to the drastic reduction in drill time, none of the Dragon’s Teeth had to be replaced during the course of the project.
CUSTOMIZING INNOVATION
Originally developed for derrick augers, Jeffrey Machine developed the larger .990-size Dragon’s Tooth to accommodate pressure augers at the request of a customer who’d started using non-rotating teeth in trenchers and mining equipment. Given the success in those applications, they asked Jeffrey Machine to hard weld some Dragon’s teeth into an auger. The result was a success, but when the teeth eventually wore out, replacing them proved difficult. The challenge was then to create a holder that would keep the tooth stationary, allow for easy replacement, and still accommodate standard round bullet teeth when necessary.
VIABLE SOLUTION
After several years of extensive research and development Jeffrey Machine introduced a viable solution. Available in .875, .990, and 38 mm sizes, the Dragon’s Tooth Rock Cutting system requires a special notched holder to lock the tooth into position that also allows standard bullet teeth to be used in those same holders. Dragon’s Tooth replacement is accomplished with the same ease as replacing the standard bullet tooth.
Teeth and holders can be purchased separately, although to get the perfect cutting angles it’s recommended to use Jeffrey Machine factory-built augers. For utility augers, Jeffrey Machine also offers shank plates and pilots, as well as .990 and 38 mm pilots for pressure augers.
BUILT FOR DEMANDING DRILLING CONDITIONS
Jeffrey Machine offers a comprehensive line of auger tooling manufactured to ensure optimal performance under the most demanding drilling conditions. Its product line includes core barrels, drilling and cleanout buckets, as well as other specialty drilling tools, parts, and truck accessories. ■
