Suppliers provide more than equipment in a strong business relationship.
By Julie Andras
Take a look around the world and you’ll see McCloskey International equipment multiplying—in the field and in the quarry—crushing, screening, and stockpiling materials for aggregate companies in very diverse conditions. Whether the quarry is in Canada, Germany, Africa or Australia, McCloskey machines are hard at work for customers across multiple applications and industries.
Customers like Duivenvoorden Haulage, based in Innisfil, Ontario, Canada, understand the power and the practicality of filling quarries with McCloskey. They have a fleet of McCloskey equipment at work in three quarries, and have expanded their business by providing custom crushing for customers.
Growing from the first 621 Trommel purchased 10 years ago, Duivenvoorden has added a duo of crushers, the J50 and C44, that are in the field providing product, as well as a pair of screeners, an S190 Triple Deck and an S130, which now service three quarries in the Golden Horseshoe region in Ontario.
FAMILY BUSINESS
Based in Innisfil, Ontario, DHL has always been a family business. In 1975, John Duivenvoorden Sr. and his wife, Patricia, launched the company for gravel pit work, building roads and whatever other construction projects came up. In 1977, they bought their first dump truck. A year later they were incorporated as Duivenvoorden Haulage Ltd. (DHL). The company took off and as the list of clients began to grow, so did the amount of trucks and excavating equipment needed to get the job done.
After many years working in the family business, the Duivenvoorden’s son, John Duivenvoorden Jr., bought the company became president of DHL as his parents started another company.
By 1995, DHL was growing significantly, buying more trucks, equipment, and property. Today, DHL has more than 25 trucks and 20 pieces of equipment along with a skilled team of operators. There are three quarries and even a 5,200-square-foot maintenance shop beside their 9th Line of Innisfil headquarters.
With growing quarrying needs, the Duivenvoorden family turned to McCloskey International in 2003 for a 621 trommel screening plant to sift topsoil and gravel. The partnership between the two companies continued to expand as DHL picked up a J50 jaw crusher and a C44 cone crusher to keep a steady supply of crushed material for DHL and others who need crushing services. A pair of McCloskey mobile screening plants, an S190 Triple Deck High Energy Screener and an S130 High Energy Vibrating Screener, sort product while McCloskey stackers keep the product piled high and ready to meet the demands of the market.
“The key to our growth over the years has been the ability to offer new services and solutions to our customers—essentially we evolved in response to them,” notes John Duivenvoorden. “Working with a company like McCloskey allows us to quickly introduce new products and solutions. We are always looking for new ways to serve our customers, and McCloskey continues to develop products that continue to help us do that.”
BROAD RANGE OF EQUIPMENT
With a diverse group of clients who have wide-ranging needs, the broad range of McCloskey equipment has helped DHL expand through the region. The ability to do its own crushing has allowed DHL to have a level of quality control it was unable to achieve before.
For John Duivenvoorden Jr., that quality is always top of mind. “Just as I want to provide quality product for my customers, I look for the best quality in the equipment I use and in the relationship with the companies who provide it”, he notes. Duivenvoorden believes that the proven performance of McCloskey equipment and the dedication of the team that back it up have helped DHL grow as a company.
When asked why he chooses to work with McCloskey, John Duivenvoorden replies, “The relationship is what keeps me coming back to McCloskey. They play a role more like a partner than a supplier, continually contributing to my operations with easy-to-use and reliable equipment. At the end of the day, it all comes down to how productive you are, and McCloskey crushers and screeners are a big part of our success.”
After 39 years, Duivenvoorden Haulage Ltd. is still going strong, providing aggregate needs and a variety of construction-related services throughout the Innisfil and Simcoe County area.
INTERNATIONAL GROWTH
McCloskey International has grown too, with 60-percent growth overall in 2012, a 30-percent increase in workforce, and the addition of over 136,000 in square footage to its plants in Canada and Northern Ireland over the past year. McCloskey manufactures a complete line of equipment, including crushers, vibrating screeners, trommels, and stacking conveyors, and has established an international reputation for high performing products that have introduced many of today’s key screening and crushing innovations. ■
